Myth-busting Obama Tries to Debunk GOP on the Economy – Bashes Trump’s Economic Policy (Part 2)
Seven years ago, newly elected President Barack Obama came to a blighted stretch of northern Indiana and predicted a tough but certain recovery — if the country embraced his approach to re-juicing the economy. He returns Wednesday seeking credit for having lifted the U.S. out of the doldrums with policies Democrats are now rallying behind as they work to elect his replacement.
Obama’s appearance — his eighth in Indiana since being elected — could be viewed as an early foray into the 2016 campaign. In excerpts of his remarks released before his speech, Obama cast the election as a choice between the paths that Democrats and Republicans want to take on the economy. President Barack Obama blasted Donald Trump’s “crazy” proposals and aggressively defended his policies Wednesday on a visit to an Indiana town that has seen a huge drop in unemployment during his administration.
The remarks in Elkhart are the start of what Obama’s aides say will be a shift toward a new stage of his second term, with the president actively campaigning to ensure that he is replaced by a Democrat.
“America’s economy is not just better than it was eight years ago. It is the strongest and most durable economy in the world,” Obama said at Concord High School in Elkhart. “By almost every economic measure, America is better off than when I came here.”
President Obama went on a “myth-busting” mission Wednesday aimed at undermining Republican arguments about the economy, working to give cover to Democrats to embrace his policies ahead of the presidential election.
Still, the president’s approval ratings have finally improved to levels where his fellow Democrats feel comfortable running on policies, especially on the economy. Hillary Clinton has proposed steps that build directly on Obama’s actions while Bernie Sanders has praised his accomplishments.
Trump supporters in Sacramento discuss how Trump unites Americans despite mainstream fairy tales of division and hate. Speaking at a rally in Sacramento, Trump was responding to comments from Obama earlier in the day suggesting that Trump doesn’t have serious proposals or policies, and makes promises he cannot keep.
“This is a president who doesn’t have a clue,” Trump said, adding “He’s going to start campaigning. Well, if he campaigns, that means I’m allowed to hit him just like I hit Bill Clinton, I guess right?” Now, we are reaping the consequences. In America today, nobody has a job in one out of every five families, and there are more than 100 million working age Americans that are currency not working. And thanks to our transition to a “service economy”, many of those that are actually working are deeply struggling too. According to the Social Security Administration, 51 percent of all American workers make less than $30,000 a year. And the Federal Reserve says that 47 percent of all Americans could not pay an unexpected $400 emergency room bill
Sadly, we have already entered the early stages of the next great economic crisis, and so things are going to get a whole lot worse for the working class before there is any chance of them getting better.
